Introducing Freelance Academy: An 8-Week Program for Local Creatives

As the gig economy continues to grow, more and more people are turning to freelance work as a means of earning a living. But for those new to the world of freelancing, it can be overwhelming to navigate the ins and outs of the industry. That’s where Freelance Academy comes in – an 8-week program designed to teach new creative professionals how to thrive in the world of freelance work.

Led by local industry experts with years of experience, Freelance Academy offers comprehensive training in everything from finding clients and managing projects to setting rates and building a sustainable business. Participants will receive hands-on instruction, practical tools, and invaluable guidance from seasoned professionals who have succeeded in the world of freelance work. This program has come together through the partnerships of Create Appalachia, Sync Space Entrepreneur Center, and Push The Pixels, a local design firm.

“We believe that anyone can succeed as a single-person business or as a contract entrepreneur if they have the right knowledge and support,” said Heath Guinn, President of Sync Space. “The Freelance Academy program is designed to give new freelancers the business tools and resources they need to support their skillsets and build a successful career in the growing digital economy.”

The 8-week program covers a range of topics, including:

  • Building Your Portfolio
  • Project Management and Communication
  • Creating a Personal Brand
  • Developing a Marketing Plan
  • Time Management and Productivity

Participants will also have the opportunity to connect with fellow freelancers and build a supportive community of peers who are going through the same challenges and triumphs of freelancing.

Freelance Academy is now accepting applications for its next program, which begins on April 6th. Participants will meet weekly on Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:00pm. There is a fee of $50, but applicants may request scholarships to cover the fee of the class. The program is open to anyone who is new to freelance work or looking to take their freelance career to the next level.

The class will be held at the Johnson City Create Appalachia Center for Arts and Technology: 714 W Walnut Street, Johnson City, TN 37604

This class will be in-person only. We believe getting to meet and interact with your instructors and classmates will give all participants the best results. We may consider doing an all-online option in the future if the demand is high enough.

The Freelance Academy course is ideal for creatives who are looking to start their careers as freelancers. Whether you’re a graphic designer, web designer, or creative professional in a related field, or if you’re a recent graduate or a professional looking to make the transition to freelance work, this course will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in the industry.

In order to get the most out of the course, it’s important that you have a foundation in design or a creative field such as web design or photography, and a passion for creating high-quality work. While the course is geared towards beginners, some prior experience in the design industry is recommended.

If you’re driven, ambitious, and ready to take control of your career, this course is perfect for you.

There will be 8 class sessions held on Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:00.

For the Freelance Academy, students will need to bring a laptop or note-taking device. It is recommended that students bring a portfolio of their work if they have one, as well as any business documents they may already have (e.g. contracts, invoices). Students should also come prepared with any questions they may have about starting their own freelance business. A positive attitude and a willingness to learn and work hard are also essential!
